De-commissioning of 2 x Wind turbines in Finland

Turbines to be restored (done by customer) and later re-installed.

Planning phase.
MSA arranged correct lifting gear and special tools via our vast network in the industry. This to assure safe and correct handling of all Main components.
Important for the customer was to have a “as-Is” state of the turbines, MSA carried out a thorough walk down concluding in a “As-Is” turbine report. At the same time a check up on Hardstand, surroundings and access roads where done – to minimize/mitigate any risk of standby time for crane, transport and manpower, resulting in extra costs for customer.

Project phase
MSA arranged manpower for de-commissioning of Turbines and had the overall site management and supervision on site. This included Daily coordination between customer and various stakeholders involved on site.

Finishing of project
MSA manpower on site was assuring all small parts, pallets, tools and various lifting gear was sent of site in a proper manner and site were left in a clean way.   

Exchange of Blade Bearing in Finland

In close cooperation with OEM service department exchange of blade bearing was planned. With the standard MSA approach as used for de-commissioning of Turbines.

For MSA a job/task always  handled with thoroughness and care to assure cost control, quality and safety to the highest standards.

Large scale blade repair project in Finland

In 2018 a recently installed wind park of 34 wind turbines, started showing defects in the lamination on a few Blades. Upon analysis our client discovered that this defect would be critical to the lifetime of the wind turbines and therefore decided to stop the operations of the wind park to take down all Blades and repair them onsite.

MSA was selected to lead all site activities along with developing and setting up the repair solution onsite that would enable our clients work instruction to be executable. The repair was in addition to the lifting activities mainly fiber repairs, which are highly temperature and humidity sensitive operations. This led to MSA developing a scaled controlled environment system along with a logistic setup to minimize the down time of each wind turbine. As the repair took place in concealed space under excessive delta temperatures in a hostile environment – winter in Finland with down to minus 30 degrees Celsius – strong and well described risk assessments and method statements had to be developed and approved. MSA took responsibility of this and together with our client managed to get all 112 Blades safely dismounted, repaired, and put back in place, while minimizing the downtime for the project owner. A performance we at MSA is immensely proud of.

28 Wind Turbines in 27 Days
– No room for failure

The Kozielice II project kicked off for MSA in the last half of 2015. Our client had won a vast amount of polish projects to be installed and commissioned prior to a subsidy driven termination date. Initially, MSA did not expect any involvement needed in these Polish projects, but soon it became clear that all sails had to be set, to complete a number of projects, for our client to avoid extreme claims on liquidated damages. A team of MSA lead site managers were dispatched to Poland, and through close collaboration with clients, investors, and even the competitors we were sent to manage a series of Construction sites.  All projects were successfully completed before the closing date.

Once the 2015 projects were conveniently wrapped up, the subsidy period turned out to be extended for 6 months to facilitate other OEM´s than our client, and this led to an opening for a fast-tracked project extension – Kozielice II.

MSA´s role in the project became to advise the OEM through the planning phase mapping and validating critical paths through the various sections and phases of the project. We were deeply involved in the resourcing of manpower and equipment needed to facilitate the very tight time schedule.

Once planned and prepared, we had the pleasure of managing the execution of the WTG installation as well. With a 5 main crane setup, working 24h shifts and delivery of up to 30 loads of main components per day, the Kozielice II team installed 28 Wind turbines in 27 Days – well ahead of schedule. Blaraidh & Stronelairg

In 2016 a major Scottish’s energy company, commenced the installation of 98 wind turbines in the Scottish´s highlands, close to Loch Ness. It was from the start the end clients intention to use the same site team for the entire build, provided performance was high in the first phase of the project. 

The initial phase consisting of 32 wind turbines was therefore used as a test of the suppliers of Site Services. MSA’s performance during the first project phase, solidified the clients confidence in MSA and the OEM which led to a contract extension to the second phase – 66 WTG on the Stronelairg project. 

The Stronelairg project proved to be even more complicated than phase one. The project is located on the top of the highland mountains in a large mountain valley, with unique microclimate conditions and unforeseen logistic complications in onshore wind. MSA played a crucial part of everyday planning, coordinating up to 400 people on site during the construction phase peaks. 

With several challenges from contractors on site, the installation plans constantly required updating, and an efficient daily communication system needed to be developed and deployed by MSA. Further transport planning and communication to the local community in regards of transport change was a key to successfully deliver the project. 

Being the appointed lead for the OEM on site, MSA was responsible for this planning, coordination, and communication along with managing the whole HSE setup of the OEM and its subcontractors on site. Through MSA’s constant surveillance, the prober frames where set up for the subcontractors on site to perform at their best. This resulted in the project being delivered within time and with the expected high standards for both in quality and safety, despite several challenges and difficulties. A result MSA is proud to have been a pivotal part of.

Site Managing of Europes
largest onsite Wind Park

In 2018, Installation the largest onshore wind turbine project in Europe was commenced, in the outskirts of Trondheim in Norway. The Fosen project, consisting of 277 wind turbines accumulating to more than 1 GW nominal capacity was to be installed in 3 phases, spread across 6 sites over a period of 3 years. MSA was chosen to supply Site managers and Site controllers for the whole portfolio by the OEM who delivered the wind turbines for the project. The initial planning started in 2017 and throughout the entire project a key focus was on transport planning, due to the logistic complexity. Further a very ambitious installation schedule was developed to mitigate the seasonal risks, which allowed installation in 4 months only per year. The ongoing improvement and the ability to take out lessons learned resulted in a successful executed project when the final phase was closed in 2020, with installation times kept within the short timeframe set forth. The end client had high requirements, for documentation, for quality of the installation to be very consistent, and to constantly have a high focus on safety. MSA together with the OEMs quality department was a key figure to ensure, uniform quality and safety standards where kept throughout the project. MSA led the execution from start to finish, to ensure a safe, timely and cost-efficient delivery of the projects.
